ReminderX - User Research and App Redesign
Problem
ReminderX had built and launched a simple to-do list and reminder app for iPhone and Android phones that was similar in function to “Reminders” on iOS and “To Do Reminder” on Android platforms. ReminderX planned to redesign and launch a new version of their app for an upcoming release. In order to provide insight into redesign requirements, the product team engaged UXD services to gather information about what user segments represented their target audience, what functionality was desired, problems needed to be solved for users, and how to solve them.
Approach
UXD services were divided into two project phases.
Project 1 was designed to discover who the target users for the application are and what they need from the product. This included developing a target customer segment, creating and running a screening document and research protocol, and identifying issues needed to be solved for users.
Project 2 focused on the redesign of the application through utilization of the target user research, interview results, and other deliverables from Project 1.
Results
Insights from the interviews were utilized to develop user personas that aligned with the most relevant use cases and desired functionality for the product, recommendations and high-level design tenets that guided the subsequent redesign.
A completely new user journey was developed iteratively based upon the results of the research, design tenets, and stakeholder feedback.
The user journey and redesigned app interfaces and functionality were presented to stakeholders to provide more detailed and realistic representations of the new ReminderX app.
The user interviews and subsequent personas developed provided me with a clearly defined direction for the redesign in terms of functionality, workflow, process, and use cases desired by the target audience. This secured buy-in from the project stakeholders and resulted in the production of a more pleasing and functional app.
Lessons Learned
Users prefer applications that allow connection between devices and users.
Users desired the ability to interact with a simplified interface with multiple categories/functionality.
Users prefer To-Do Lists and Reminders that are easy to use and relevant.
